The shell of the smokebox is made from a piece of 16 gauge brass tube 35/8 in outside diameter. Square off each end in the lathe, to an overall length of 9/2 in., and take the same precautions as when squaring the boiler barrel, viz., put a wood or metal disc in the end held in the chuck; otherwise, despite the short length, the tube will fly out as soon as the turning tool starts to cut. At 2 in. from one end, cut a 1 in. hole for the chimney liner. Anyone who has a 1 in. parallel reamer and the necessary drills can first drill a 1/8.
