A friend of many years standing, MR. Root, had seen my model engineering projects and enquired to see if I would build a locomotive for him. I replied that as long as there were plans, drawings and castings available it should not be a problem. But before I could draw my next breath he informed me which locomotive he wished me to build and, of course, none of the above - plans, drawings etc. - were available. Not being someone who would fall at the first hurdle, I started in earnest to see what was available.
