Firebox problems have hit Scotsman overhaul... but NRM are still aiming for a 2010 return. The much-anticipated overhaul of the National Railway Museum's celebrity Gresley A3 No. 4472 Flying Scotsman has suffered an unexpected setback after faulty welds were discovered in the rebuilt copper inner firebox. The discovery was made after the boiler was delivered from Devon to Ian Riley's works at Bury, prompting the NRM to order an independent examination by non-destructive testing specialist, Frazer Nash of Bury. The firebox has subsequently been returned to the contractor, Pridhams of Tavistock, where repairs have been carried out -at the time of going to press it had not returned to Bury.
