The Author visits a museum which displays the incredible variety of Leeds industry and engineering. Leeds citizens once claimed that their birthplace was "the city of a thousand trades". Some of these are now well displayed in the city's industrial museum situated to the west of the city. The River Aire provided water power for enterprises such as the corn mill once operated on the museum site. From the early 18th century it served the cloth trade as a fulling mill. Water hammers beat the cloth to felt it. The wheel and hammers can still be seen.
