Hatchery managers are scrambling to find a safe and effective replacement for formaldehyde as a means of sanitizing eggs and hatchery equipment. Formaldehyde has been branded a potent carcinogen and already banned from use in the U.S. hatchery industry. However, it is noteworthy that, even after all the years of exclusive use of formaldehyde in hatcheries, no microorganisms have become resistant to formaldehyde. This attribute explains why formaldehyde is/ was popular with the hatchery industry and identifies the challenge to find a safe replacement for sanitizing eggs.
