Access to justice and the courts is something that is often taken for granted in the developed world, but a panel of experts discussed why this is so important during a recent panel discussion held by the London School of Economics (LSE). The session was chaired by Dr Veerle Hey-vaert, an associate professor of law from the LSE, who emphasised the topicality of the discussion. "We are now more dependent than ever on the extractive industries, but what has come over the past few years has been a strong awareness of the enormous impact that these industries have on human health, on the environment, on the economy and ecology, and so this is extremely topical and an incredibly important issue to be discussing," she said.
