Silicosis is an incurable, progressive, condition that ranges in severity from mild to severe and which is especially associated with prolonged and intensive dust exposure on gold mines. A series of epidemiological studies published over the past 15 years have consistently found epidemic rates of between 20-30% of silicosis in black South African gold miners. Silicosis generally takes 15-30 years to develop from the time of first exposure.
