TB prevention in South Africa

Despite considerable advances in the prevention and cure of infectious diseases, the World Health Organization still ranks South Africa third in the world in terms of the total number of incident tuberculosis (TB) cases. The prevalence of TB in the mining community in particular is of considerable concern, so much so that in 2004, the Aurum Institute in South Africa, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and other collaborating institutions embarked on a clinical trial specifically looking into TB prevention among gold miners in the country.
