INDONESIA, like many countries with an abundance of natural resources, wants a bigger say in how those resources are exploited and a larger share of the value created. However, when the pursuit of this legitimate interest in maximising domestic socio-economic benefit cuts across existing private rights, the result can be significant unfairness to foreign investors, as well as uncertainty and wider unintended consequences.
