Many of the mining industry's solid bulk material products, such as copper concentrate, iron ore, coal and bauxite, travel by sea to their customers. The shipment of these products must comply with the international maritime environmental and safety rules set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the inter-governmental authority that regulates shipping. MARPOL is the IMO treaty that governs marine pollution issues, through a series of annexes that define specific types of potential marine pollution sources and the rules that govern their handling and disposal.
