Brazil may extend Gesac public sectorbroadband contract

Brazil's Ministry of Science, Technology,Innovation and Com m unication adm its itmay have to extend the current contractfor the provision of broadband services toschools under the Gesac program, reportsValor Economico. The provider, a consortiumconsisting of Embratel, Vivo and Oi, providesfree connections to schools and publicagencies. The Ministry said that the extensionof the contract “is not the best alternative” dueto the high costs and poor quality of services,but acknowledged that it was not an optionto disrupt existing services when the currentcontract expires next month. The deal was firstsigned in 2014 at a value of BRL 160 million.The Ministry originally planned not to renewit and signed another contract with Telebras,which has since been suspended.
