NE CANE GROWERS ASK GOVERNMENT TO STOP US FUEL ETHANOL IMPORTS

Northeastern (NE) cane growers group Uniao Nordestina dos Produtores de Cana (Unida) have asked the national petroleum agency, ANP, to ban fuel ethanol imports into the region. Unida justified the move with the economic problems that are currently being faced by NE cane growers. Lower ethanol prices as a result of cheap imports reduce revenues of cane growers, which are still suffering from the fall-out of the 2011/12 drought. Unida added that the fuel ethanol imports from the US are not monitored by ANP.
