Sugar production in Brazil's Centre/South during the second half of January reached 43,900 tonnes, tel quel, up 7.4% from 40,800 in the same period a year ago, but down from 68,800 tonnes in the first half the month, the Sugarcane Industry Association of Sao Paulo (Unica) said. 91 mills were still operating in the first half of January of the roughly 350 in the region, a number which fell to 63 in the second half of last month and has fallen again to 36 so far in February, Unica added. Cane crushing over the second fortnight of January totalled 2.58 mln tonnes, up from 1.55 mln in the same period last year.
