EPA preliminary enforcement policies lack basis for including mining, NMA says

The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) latest proposal for enforcement and compliance assurance priorities for fiscal years 2005, 2006 and 2007 "lack any firm foundation whatsoever far selecting 'mining' or 'mineral processing' as a national enforcement priority," NMA said this week. "This paper ('Proposed Priority: Mineral Processing') betrays a critical lack of knowledge of (1) the industry's nature and operations and (2) the extensive federal and state regulatory programs that apply to mining and mineral processing," NMA said. The agency published a Federal Register notice on Dec. 10, 2003, seeking comments on the proposal.
