Mineralogical investigations of carbonated water deposits from the area of Polish Carpathians

Outflows of carbonated waters can be recognized by the presence of characteristic yellow-brownish, ochre-like deposits and escaping bubbles of CO_2. These deposits occur as thin coats, efflorescences, foaming gel or jelly-like suspensions. Dry deposits, not contacting with water, are usually brownish-yellow. earthy, porous and brittle. The material used in mineralogical investigations was collected from spring niches and along water outflows. Samples were X-rayed with a Phillips APD X'Pert diffracto-meter and chemically analysed in microareas with a JEOL ISM5200 scanning electron microscope with an EXL EDS-Link attachment.
