Gerard: Coal has fundamental role in maintaining U.S. economy, quality of life

Making a strong appeal for congressional passage of the pending energy bill, NMA President and CEO Jack N. Gerard this week said that if the U.S. economy "is to remain vibrant and our quality of life good, we should not and cannot underestimate the fundamental role of coal." Gerard spoke at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Clean Coal and Power Conference in Washington. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham, who was also on the program, told the conference that "clean coal is the cornerstone of our current energy portfolio, particularly for power generation, and it will continue to be for the long-term future."
