Steel safeguard duty stirs a hornet's nest

Safeguard duty on steel products imports has stirred a hornet's nest. While the European steel makers and South Korea has protested against the duty, a CCI-sponsored study has suggested the competition watchdog should investigate the HR coil industry. The European Union Steel Producers' Federation (Eurofer) has protested India's move to safeguard the domestic steel market through anti-dumping duties even after endorsing the country's commitments to avoid protectionism at the recent G-20 summit. Eurofer has criticised India for its plan to impose safeguard duty on HR steel imports on top of an antidumping investigation, which is already underway.
