Wire ropes play a very important role in mining. On the sinewy steel strands of hoisting ropes hang the safety of miners as they are transported to and from their working places. On these ropes are lowered the equipment and supplies, and are hoisted the mineral products that sustain the enterprise. Without a hoisting rope, such operations cannot continue. For these reasons, the design of mine hoisting plants and wire hoisting ropes are extremely conservative. Practice demands this since shaft accidents, as well as often being ghastly, will shut down an operation for a period. To say that rope failures are to be avoided at all costs is an understatement.
