Re fall helps steel exports to touch over million mark in 3 months

The Indian rupee's consistent fall in the few months has come as a blessing in disguise for domestic steelmakers. Exports of steel have, for the first time in three months, jumped to over one million tonne overcoming the slack domestic demand. This trend may see India becoming a net exporter of steel this year over turning its status as a net importer in the last few years. This comes even as producers are crying foul over rising imports due to free trade agreements and the recent government decision to exempt steel imports for specific end use from quality control norms.
