Recycling aging ships in a more friendly environmental way had been the theme of the five-day conference recently held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The conference main aim was to have countries agreeing in regard to the international rules governing the ship breaking industry. The least expensive way to dismantle a ship can also be the most costly to the environment and human lives. It is called "beaching" and is common in South Asia, where ships are run aground and then dismantled, their steel and other materials sold as scrap.
