International Toxicity Ring-Test on Sediment Dwelling Chironomus riparius - Preliminary Small-Scale Test -

After the development of a sediment toxicity test had been initiated in 1992, a small-scale ring test was performed in 1993 by five German and UK laboratories. Emergence studies were conducted, exposing Chironomus riparius larvae to formulated products of both lindane and trifluralin in sediment-water systems using both natural and articial sediments. In addition, acute water-only tests were carried out. Results showed consistency among laboratories and similarity for the different sediments. Therefore both test design and the culturing method seemed robust enough to initiate a wider-scale international ring test.
