The fast moving development in process automation and computer technique has various influences on the solution provider of industrial automation systems and on the production itself. The life-cycle of operating systems and hardware compatible to these operating systems is getting shorter and shorter. This pushes the developers of industrial automation systems also to shorter product life-cycles, which has at the end a huge influence on the production using these operating systems and automation systems. Production lines are forced to start migrations and modernizations earlier as 20 years ago due to unavailability of spare parts, hotline support and incompatible new hardware. On the other hand the new operating and automation systems offer more and better diagnostic features for the maintenance staff resulting in a better preventive maintenance and a quicker fault elimination time.
