Global sugar prices jumped after India's Election Commission approved a government proposal to allow duty-free imports of white sugar and to ease further raw sugar import regulations. London white sugar basis October 2009 closed $10.60 higher at $408.10 per tonne, while white sugar basis March 2010 gained $6.60 to $409.10. The spot price for raw sugar in New York ended 74 points higher at 14.50 cents/lb, while raw sugar basis October 2009 rose 41 points to 14.35 cents/lb.
