Model calculations on the evolution of sugar and ethanol production cost up to the 2015/16 (Apr/Mar) sugar cycle show that margins remained in the red. However, some recovery is in sight, but the main challenge remains the lack of cash at the mills. This factor is identified as the key bottleneck for the further development of the Brazilian sugar sector including a more efficient production and more power generation from bagasse.
