DEVELOPMENTS IN SHAPED WIRES FOR LOCKED COIL HOIST ROPES

The paper briefly contrasts the advantages and limitations of locked coil hoist ropes on drum and koepe mine hoists. Bridon has addressed these limitations and details are presented on the results of a development programme which has been pursued over recent years. An explanation is given of the achievements that have been made in wire drawing die design and wire processing developments. These have resulted in increasing the available tensile strengths of shaped wire, along with much improved wire toughness and property consistency. A comparison is given of the currently available rope breaking forces with that which is now possible through these new methods and the consequent benefits which are available to mine hoist engineers and operators through the use of improved rope characteristics.
