Raw sugar futures in New York ended calendar 2015 on a strong note as the nearby March contract ended at 15.24 cents/lb. The first session of the new year then saw prices declining to 14.97 cents/lb on weakness of the Brazilian real. After all, raw sugar futures rebounded more than 50% off a seven-year low hit at 10.13 cents/lb in August as the fundamental supply and demand scenario is improving amid expectations for the first deficit in six years. Raw sugar futures rose 5.0% on the year after ending 2014 at 14.52 cents/lb, their first annual advance since 2010.
