Given the diversity and the wide geographical spread of the world sugar industry, it will come as no surprise that common trends may be difficult to identify. While there can be little doubt that cane sugar producers have been gaining market share inrecent years, the situation in 2011/12 was almost unique insofar as beet sugar manufacturers staged a very strong comeback while companies operating in Brazil fell back. The other feature of the picture in 2011/12 is the very strong showing of the leading Thai firms due not only to the country's record crop itself but also to the continuing buying spree by the country's market leader, Mitr Phol.
