The Fujian port of Xiamen was the leading the gateway for zircon sand and concentrates into China in the first quarter of 2008. It accounted for nearly 30 percent of all imports, the bulk of this tonnage coming from Australia. Xiamen is a growing importer of zircon, feeding the thriving ceramics industries in both Fujian and Guangzhou provinces. It is also home to a number of concentrate processing plants, and these plants last year processed a good proportion of the Kalimantan concentrates. Indeed, last year Xiamen was also a significant zircon port, but was well behind the leader of 2007, Shanghai.
