The South African mining industry remains under the spotlight amidst repeated calls from the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) for the nationalisation of mines. The idea of state participation in mining is not a new one. Many countries in Africa have state mining companies, such as Endiama in Angola and Gecamines in the Democratic Republic of Congo, actively participating in the sector. There is also Zimbabwe's controversial 'indiginisation' policy, stipulating at least 51 % Zimbabwean ownership of all mining assets in the country.
