Turning 'useless' waste into valuable energy

Waste can be dealt with in a number of ways: it can be re-used, recycled, composted, incinerated or disposed of by landfilling. Clearly, from an environmental point of view, the last option is the least preferable one. That's why Sweden's Sysav, the Solid Waste Company of Southwest Scania, has adopted a very straightforward policy: as much recycling as possible and only as much landfilling as absolutely necessary. This philosophy is underlined by the company's new waste-to-energy plant converting waste into energy for thousands of households in southern Sweden.
