Beneficiation in South Africa is a hot topic, with the Department of Minerals & Energy (DME) trying its best to promote the development of local value-adding businesses to the country's mineral resources. Although beneficiation is normally associated with extremely capital-intensive projects and plants needed for smelting and refining metal, a large part of the government's national beneficiation strategy is specifically focused on developing many (normally labour intensive) small to medium business opportunities in the beneficiation sphere. A key sub-sector of particular interest to government's beneficiation drive is the diamond sector.
