World coffee futures have fallen in the period under review, with losses reaching around 3% in arabicas and 6-7% in robustas. Prices fell despite the most recent announcements that confirmed drought losses of the Brazilian crop of at least 30% in themain growing regions.The front-month September arabica contract on ICE dropped 6.30 cents, or 3.2%, between July 31 and August 15 to end at 188.75 cents/lb. The December contract settled at 193.15 cents/lb, down 5.60 cents in the period under review.Robusta futures in London also closed down, ending at the lowest in nine weeks on August 14 at $1,945 per tonne, basis the September contract. Values did, however, recover somewhat on August 15. The benchmark September contract eventually gave up $153, or 7.3%, to $1,951 per tonne, while the November contract finished at $1,962 a tonne on August 15, down $127 since July 31.The differential between arabicas and robustas widened marginally in the first half of August to 100.25 cents/lb, up 0.6%. Speculators in arabica coffee futures and options on ICE Futures US remained bullish although they decreased their net long position by some 1,101 contracts to 30,010 in the week ended August 12. In London, speculators also remained on the bullish side as they raised their net long position in robusta coffee futures and options on NYSE LIFFE by 1,302 lots to 31,622 in the week ended August 5.
