U.S. tops world in oil and gas output

The U.S. has overtaken Russia as the biggest crude oil and natural gas producer in a demonstration of the seismic shift in the world energy landscape caused by America's shale plays. Domestic oil production rose to a record last year, gaining 1.6 million bbl/d (MMbbl/d), according to BP Plc's "Statistical Review of World Energy," released in June. Gas output also climbed, putting America ahead of Russia as a producer of combined hydrocarbons.
