Reflections on 29~thTriennial Congress of International Confederation of Midwives,Durban South Africa, 19-23 June 2011

An interesting start to my trip - winter in South Africa is like spring in the UK, so whilst the African midwives arrived in winter clothes most Europeans were enjoying the Durban sunshine and having coffee and lunch breaks in the conference venue patio areas.The warmth of the winter sun however, was totally out shone by the welcome that delegates were given throughout the conference. The multi-faith service celebration was enhanced by singing from the Clermont community choir and the Opera Kings', renditions of local and international songs. I just knew that this conference was going to be special. The opening ceremony led by Bridget Lynch (ICM president) was lively and entertaining, with Kearsney college choir, traditional drums and dancers from South Africa. The unity and harmony of South Africa was welcomed by all delegates, especially during the flag ceremony of 94 countries who were attending. The exact number of midwives was estimated at 3,000 and the UK delegation of over 200 made plenty of noise as our flag was led into the hall.
