U.S. island states and territories may soon be able to diversify their petroleum-based energy sources to LNG due to relatively low gas prices and new shipping technology, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Hawaii and the territories of Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa in the Pacific, along with Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, have traditionally depended on imported petroleum products for electricity needs, according to the EIA. Relatively high crude prices in recent years have driven up residential electricity prices on the islands to three to five times the average prices in the Lower 48 states, the EIA said.
