GERMANY REAAAINS TOP DESTINATION OF VIETNAM'S COFFEE EXPORTS IN 2014/15

Vietnam's coffee industry made it into the headlines in 2014/15 as global prices which local farmers and exporters did not consider high enough enticed local industry players to withhold beans from the market. This was when London robusta futures prices fell below $2,000 a tonne early last year and obviously intended to raise them back to that level, but ample availability of beans from other origins - especially low-quality Brazilian arabicas - reduced demand for robusta and proved this exercise tobecome a complete failure. Indeed, robusta prices did not only not improve throughout the 2014/15 season, but with an estimated 10-15% of the 2014/15 crop still in domestic warehouses when the new 2015/16 crop was approaching, pressure was building on industry stakeholders to eventually part with their old-crop beans. When this eventually happened the result was that London robusta futures touched a 5-1/2-year low earlier in January - at $1,339 a tonne for the benchmark March contract.
