Pamodzi Gold, a joint venture company between Pamodzi Resources and Canada's Superior Mining Corporation, has brought its Middelvlei Opencast Gold Mine near Randfontein on the West Rand into production. Mining operations started on February 8, 2006. Operations will initially focus on the Black Reef, producing at a rate of 1 5 000 t/month of mine ore, which will yield about 16 000 oz/y of gold. In addition, the company is undertaking an exploration programme on the Middelvlei Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) horizons on the Middelvlei property. Significant resources of near-surfaceore are present along these two reefs. An initial exploration drilling programme was completed by the end of February 2006 and an updated resource estimate is imminent.
