IFC's environmental standards get tough

THE private-sector investment arm of the World Bank, the International Finance Corp, has adopted a new set of environmental and social standards, with implementation expected once the new rules have been approved by the board of the IFC this month. The new standards will replace the existing guidelines - adopted in 1998 - in all IFC-sponsored projects (and not just in mining). As were the existing guidelines, the new standards are likely also to be incorporated into the Equator Principles.
