Global coffee futures posted a strong year-end rally but then gave up all of the previous gains early in the new year as overall market sentiment for commodities remained bearish. The Reuters commodity index fell to the lowest level in more than 13 years with additional pressure for coffee stemming from the Brazilian real's drop to a 2-1/2-month low against the dollar. The benchmark March arabica future in New York therefore ended at 119.00 cents/lb on January 8, unchanged from mid-December but downsharply from its December 31 intraday high of 126.80 cents. Despite the year-end rally, arabica futures ended 2015 down about 24% as one of the worst-performing commodities. Second-month May shed 0.10 cent in the period under review to close at 121.20.
