Static and dynamic stability in dense mediumseparation processes are defined, and a model for dynamic DMSsystems provides the density differential (a measure of dynamicstability) as a function of the static stability and parameters relatedto the geometry of separatory vessels and operating conditions. Apilot test rig was installed to: (a) study the behaviour of conicaland cylindrical dense medium dynamic separators particularlyconcerning sink and float densities and density differential underdifferent operating conditions; (b) check the correlation modelbetween density differential and static stability. The results providean interesting description of the different behaviour of conical andcylindrical vessels, regarding the density differential they exhibit,and help explain the differences between the performance of thetwo types of separators.
