Humanitarian teams embarked on USS Kearsarge. "The mission aimed to foster goodwill and demonstrate U.S. commitment and support to Latin America and the Caribbean." On April 9, 2008, a U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) pharmacy officer volunteered to deploy on the Navy's USS Kearsarge for a 28-day mission. This deployment provided an opportunity for a pharmacist to offer pharmaceutical services to underserved populations. Operation Continuing Promise 2008 provided an opportunity for the Department of Health and Human Services to showcase Secretary Leavitt's overarching strategy for the health diplomacy. Secretary Leavitt's Health Diplomacy Initiative was designed to increase the operational capacity of U.S. government personnel to deliver humanitarian assistance, perform public health assessments, conduct public health infrastructure repair, and provide health care training to indigenous health care workers in the Caribbean and Latin America.
