Online Gambling: An Appreciation of Legal Issues

Online gambling has recently been generating phenomenal levels of legal and commercial interest in cross-border state and non-state entities. Debt-ridden governments are getting more and more inclined to embrace online gambling as a potential source of revenue as they face budgetary shortfalls. This activity has also commanded much attention from the worldwide media. However, there has been no comprehensive response or perspective on addressing any of the issues raised from any international legal professional body. This article briefly identifies and discusses the different legal issues connected to online gambling, such as consumer protection, tax, money laundering, trade and the conflict of laws concerning the legality of online gambling between diverse jurisdictions. The article also highlights the occurrence of certain recent events that reinforce the fact that online gambling is here to stay.
