Impala to bid for Zimplats?

Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd and Zimbabwe Platinum Mines Ltd (Zimplats) are currently in discussions regarding the latter company's future after Implats acquired an additional 21 percent interest in Zimplats last week (MJ, August 23, p.141). Under the terms of an agreement made between the two companies in 2001, Implats undertook that at such time it acquired AurionGald's 21 percent interest, it would make a cash offer to Zimplats' other shareholders an the same terms, or sell its shareholding dawn to 35 percent. Following last week's transaction, 51.05 percent of Zimplats is now held by Impala Platinum (Zimbabwe Pty), which in turn is 50.1 percent-owned by Implats and 49.9 percent-owned by ABSA Bank Ltd. Implats' beneficial interest in Zimplats held via this company is 36.05 percent, and ABSA holds 15 percent.
