Liebherr service helps R 996 Litronic conquer desert conditions

US Borax relies on its Liebherr R 996 Litronic face shovel for production at its operations in the harsh conditions of California's Mojave Desert. Equipped with a 34 m~3/44.4 yd~3 bucket, the excavator four-pas-loads 218 t/240 st haulers in a double-sided loading system.Working conditions at the mine site can be difficult. Temperatures can reach plus-60 deg C/140 deg F in the pit area, while the aggressive nature of the ore gives the potential for borax crystallisation onto key machine components such as hydraulic cylinders. In order to keep the R 996 working properly, Liebherr has a full service contract on the machine, guaranting US Borax a minimum availability, including scheduled servicing. Being responsible for all aspects of maintenance, and in view of the mine's isolated location, it is essential for Liebherr to be virtually self-sufficient on site; parts not held in stock can be flown in from Newport News or the Colmar logistics centre at short notice.
