Base metal prices on the London Metal Exchange got off to a relatively healthy start at the beginning of the year. Fund-led buying provided a spur which pushed the prices of most metals higher throughout the March quarter of the year Towards the end of the March quarter; the optimism for the global economy waned, and the prices of aluminium, zinc and lead retreated. However; the three-months nickel price still stands some 27 percent higher than it was at the end of last year; with its strength, as with tin and copper; reflecting the fact that each metal has its own particular fundamentals in addition to those of the global economy as a whole.
