Ripon extension

Extraction of sand and gravel at Ripon City Quarry for Brown and Potter was narrowly approved by North Yorkshire CC in June. Ripon City Quarry is adjacent to Ripon Racecourse, where extraction has taken place for over 30 years. Consent for the current area of extraction was granted in 2000 for removal of 280,000t of material over 3-4 years with restoration to arable land and a small fishing lagoon (see Mineral Planning 83 p.43). Extraction took place more quickly than was anticipated, and permission was sought for a further area of working to the south of the current site, 18 ha, yielding an estimated 900,000t of sand and gravel, which would be worked over a 9 year period. An amended extraction plan was submitted following the site visit by Members reducing the extraction area to 17.2 ha with reduction of mineral volume to 850,000t to be worked over an eight and a half year period. Because of delay in revised national planning guidance on aggregates, the operators were unable to progress the proposal through the Mineral Local Plan and so submitted the application. The total application area was 25 ha and the applicant was required to submit an Environmental Statement.
