First Quantum Minerals Ltd announced late last week that the resource estimate at its new copper mine at Lonshi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a satellite to its Bwana Mkubwa operation just over the border in Zambia, has been increased by 390 percent. The release was received too late to be included in the article on Lonshi published in last week's Mining Journal (MJ, October 5, p.255). In that article, the company noted that, providing the then-estimated resource of 1 Mt of oxide at 6 percent Cu (60,000 t contained copper) was expanded to 250,000 t contained copper in oxides, an expansion of the Bwana Mkubwa operation was envisaged.
