Controversial UN report cites mining companies in DRC

A panel of independent experts appointed by the United Nations (UN) to investigate the exploitation of mineral resources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has concluded that financial restrictions should be imposed on companies, businessmen, ministers and soldiers charged with involvement in "plundering". If the UN Security Council agrees, these companies would be barred from accessing financial institutions, including receiving funding or establishing partnerships. Companies recommended for financial sanctions included Belgian-owned Enterprise General Malta Forrest and Group George Forrest (which is listed as exploiting cobalt and copper); British Virgin Islands-registered Tremalt Ltd, owned by a UK-based Zimbabwean, John Bredenkamp (cobalt and copper); Rwanda-based Eagle Wings Resources International, (coltan - tantalum); the Minerals Business Co., of Kinshasa (minerals trading); DRC-based Oryx Natural Resources (diamonds exploitation); Uganda- and DEC-based Conmet (coltan trading); DRC-based Congo Holding Development Co.(trading and exploitation of natural resources); and Exaco (cobalt and copper exploitation), about which no further details are given.
