Mixed fortunes for SA gold producers

DESPITE the rise in the gold price, AngloGold Ashanti Ltd made a net attributable loss of R1.46 billion for the three months to December 31,2005, compared with a (restated) loss of R415 million in the September quarter. Headline earnings (which ignore certain amortisation and impairment charges and discontinued operations) amounted to a loss of R1.10 billion, but if unrealised non-hedge derivative charges and the fair-value gain on a convertible bond are also discounted, then underlying headline earnings rose by 81 percent, to R250 million.
