ECOM launches emission test system for heavy duty diesels

ECOM America has introduced the Universal Gas Analysis System (UGAS). UGAS was developed in cooperation with a large mining company that uses diesel engine emissions monitoring as a maintenance tool. The UGAS idea, which began in 1997, was initially conceived as a way to reduce ventilation costs in the mine The idea was that if the diesel engines could be monitored and better maintained, ventilation' costs could be reduced because of better air quality in the mine. As it turned out, implementing the UGAS system along with a 6 step scheduled maintenance program not only resulted in reduced ventilation costs, but significant savings in fuel costs, engine overhaul and/or replacement, and machine downtime. According to maintenance supervisors at one of the mine locations, the payback on the system is almost immediate.
